Less than 50 parties have climbed 4,996m Mount Blackburn in Alaska’s Wrangell Mountains, so it still retains it’s rugged untouched feeling. Glaciers encroach on Mount Blackburn on all of it’s faces and there is a sheering drop of four miles from the west face to the Kuskulana glacier.
Mount Blackburn is high enough to feel like an achievement and the scene encompasses dramatic ice falls, ice fields and deep crevasses, but is still thought of as a moderate climb by Alaskan standards. The route requires a lot of challenging climbing, some over glaciers and along the northwest ridge of the mountain over looking the 75 mile long Nabesna Glacier. It starts from an airstrip on the glacier.
