In the heart of the Japan Alps, Kamikochi Valley is a renowned for its beauty among Japanese. A hike up the glacier-carved valley reveals painterly scenes reminiscent of the finest Japanese landscape art. At the lower end of the valley is Taisho-ike, a lake from which dead trees protrude in a ghostly scene; the lake was created when an eruption of the volcano Yake-dake (“Burning Peak”) dammed the river that drains the valley. Kamikochi is very popular among Japanese and gets extremely crowded during summer holidays but its legendary beauty is still mostly intact. The most popular alpine hike in Japan loops from Kamikochi across the summits of the Hodaka Range and takes several days.
