The region encompassing Slovenia's Julian Alps and the Karst country is fascinating to explore both above and below ground. This area has some of the most most spectacular caves in the world, as well as world class kayaking and rafting on the Soka River. The Julian Alps comprise the unspoiled easternmost part of the Alps proper. Fjord-like Lake Bohinj is gorgeous, and the famous Lake Bled with its castle on an isle in the center of the lake is also picture-postcard pretty. The high country of the Julian Alps resembles the Italian Dolomites to the west: brilliant spires of pinkish limestone rising dramatically above deep, green, U-shaped valleys. The natural beauty of Slovenia is legendary and it well deserves its reputation.
