The highest mountain of the Nilgiri Hills in India’s Tamil Nadu district, Doddabetta is crowned with a dense forest nature reserve. The area is famed for its biodiversity, both in terms of plant and animal life, and the fern and rhododendron-studded hike or drive past sweeping grassy slopes and shoals to the top will bring you out on a tree-clad summit which commands glorious views over the surrounding peaks and valleys, and the distant Chamundi Hills. The colonial hill station of Ootacumund, now a holiday resort, and its exotic botanical gardens are to be found on the lower slopes.
