Booroomba, Gibraltar Peak and Canberra climbing

Listed under Rock Climbing in Canberra, Australia.

The huge granite slabs and boulders around Canberra are a bit of a paradise for climbers looking for good adventure climbing and a natural escape. Booroomba Rocks and Gibraltar Peak are my two standout sites, with hundreds of routes to suit most tastes and standards. Most of the climbing is on granite slabs or cracks, and whilst most of the slabs are bolted, traditional protection is still used on many climbs.

Walking into the blue grey bush from the car park on a clear Canberra day, it's as much about the location as it is about the climbing. Great views of Canberra can be had from both locations, and a brew on the tops at dusk is a great way to wrap-up a day. The 4th edition of the local guide, ACT Granite can be obtained from most Canberra outdoor stores, and is a great introduction to all on offer. There are many more locations scattered around the ACT, again mostly granite, and most of the time you’ll have the rock to yourself. Climbing is possible all year round, although you’ll be seeking the sun in winter, and the shade in summer, as Canberra experiences both extremes.

Since the Canberra fires of 2003 a lot of regrowth has made access a bit more difficult in some areas, however increased traffic will continue to facilitate easy access. Also be aware of rock which may have been affected by the fires; check flakes etc first before committing.
