This place of worship begun its career as the Saint Sophia Cathedral at the beginning of the 13th Century but by the end of the 15th it had become Cyprus’s chief mosque. Selimiye looks like its history – a French Gothic church melded into a mosque with the addition of two minarets, now flying the Turkish and Cypriot flags. Inside you can see the marks of the realignment towards Mecca, and the whitewash run over everything with a Christian connotation, but the Gothic vaults, monumental entrance door and detailed carving work haven’t been covered over.

This is a working mosque, so while that means you’re welcome to have a look inside, you need to be aware of the etiquette and stay silent and reverent, remove your shoes on entry and don’t take any photos if there are prayers going on.
