This mosque is Malaysia's most important – the headquarters – and has a capacity of 15,000 to reflect that importance. The relatively modern design reveals the mosques relative youth – it went up in 1965 and is a miracle in reinforced concrete and steel. The roof is probably one of the mosques most memorable features, it's a 18 pointed star, supposed to resemble an umbrella, but a 73 metre high minaret is the feature you see first. It sounds quite plain compared to some of the grand Islamic architecture of India, but this mosque has a reputation for being one of the most beautiful in South East Asia. Part of the appeal could be the beautifully landscaped garden which surrounds it.

Visitors are welcomed but have to be dressed appropriately.
