Fewer attractions offer more insight into Oman's rich heritage and culture than the twin forts- Jalali and Mirani Fort. Their location alone is grand, as they sits atop a rocky cliff, giving panoramic views of the harbor and the old city. The forts are excellent examples of in depth defense systems designed to foil foreign attackers. Both forts have a myriad of rooms and staircases aimed to confuse the enemies and the heavy wooden doors were just another one of the many defense mechanisms used to impede the oncoming enemies from penetrating the castle. Both forts are now set up as museums, giving visitors a special look at the martial skills and the grandeur of Omani fortifications.
