The peaceful countenance of the Tian Tan Buddha or Big Buddha, eyes fixed low, legs crossed and one arm raised and symbolic message linking man and nature and people and religion, is in contrast with his vast bronze bulk. Raised on a lotus platform near the Po Lin Monastery and surrounded by eight smaller statues of the immortals, Tian Tan is 34 metres high and weighs 250 tonnes.
To reach the Buddha, visitors have to climb 268 steps which circle around his lotus.
Inside his platform are three long halls housing relics including a huge carved brass bell which is designed to ring every seven minutes symbolising a release from our human problems. It’s free to visit the Buddha but to enter halls you have to pay admission - but you get a free meal (vegetarian obviously) at the monastery with your entrance fee.
Completed in 1993, Tian Tan was pipped at the post in 2007 for title of tallest seated, outdoor, bronze Buddha.
