Commissioned by the Malla king Jaya Ranjit in 1753, Bhaktapur's famous Golden Gateway serves as a magnificent, imposing entrance to the 'palace of 55 windows' in the city's Durbar Square. It is regarded as an extremely important work in Nepalese art history, for the exceptionally well-executed gilded copper workings that cover most of its surface.

The goddesses Garuda and Kali are represented at the pointed top of the gate, watching over all who enter, and winged, mythical creatures are grouped around the finials which adorn its pagoda-style roof. Two groups of five Hindu deities are represented on the panels at either side of the doorway itself, and the whole gate is constructed around an archway of red brick, setting off the gilded sections to great effect.
