As soon as you see this landmark you know you’re in Rio, or looking at Rio, as with the famous scene from Moonraker when Jaws is trying to kill James Bond. Supposedly the smooth, rounded shape of this peak is the same shape as a concentrated sugar loaf. It rises, like a giant jelly with an additional rounded peak straight out of Rio’s coastline, all smooth sides of granite with just a sprinkling of green clinging to the top.

You can see it from all over Rio, it’s a pretty sizable landmark, but if you want to do more than look the most common way to summit it is in one of the big glassy cable cars. Each car seats 75 and they run at 20 minute intervals from the bottom of the hill to the first stop at Morro da Urca, 220metres off the ground, where there is a restaurant and play area, then onwards and upwards to the top for a view of Rio is laid out below in colourful glory.

For rock climbers Sugar Loaf offers more inspiration, it’s one of the world’s largest urban climbing areas with more than 270 routes – in a range of challenge settings.
