Between the six metre thick walls of the El Morro fortress and the rocky cliffs overlooking the Atlantic, is the San Juan Cemetery, probably one of THE necropolises to be buried in if you like scenic views.

Mary’s circular chapel, red-domed and neoclassical, is one of the few buildings here, but the tombstones are art and architecture in themselves in many cases – there are some pretty elaborate versions on the theme. At first this was supposed to be a resting place reserved for war veterans from the colonial period and of note, but gradually it’s been opened up to the great and the good and there are some famous names scrawled on the headstones if you can make them out amongst some ornate decorative work.
