Founded at the end of the 11th Century, this monastery was built high up amongst the expansive views of the Troodos Mountains.

As well as admiring the view, visitors can visit the museum inside the monastery, it’s part museum, part treasury of all the icons, vestments, carvings, manuscripts, and other religious items belonging to the monastery, but is done up in quite a grand fashion with marble floors, a carefully carved roof and wooden panelled walls. This is one of the wealthiest monasteries in Cyprus also. The monastery’s most prized possession is the icon of the Virgin, supposedly painted by the apostle Luke, and the reason the monastery was founded on this spot over the cave of a hermit whom God promised the icon to for his virtuousness.

It’s been quite a famous monastery though out Cypriot history, but never more so than in the 20th Century when it became known for being the monastery the first President of Cyprus was a monk in. When the President died he was buried only 3kms away.
