It may surprise you to hear that the Lincoln Memorial was dedicated in 1922 and constructed in the few years prior to that (Lincoln died in 1865). The famous, and impressively proportioned staute of Lincoln that's one of the memorial's most famous features was only constructed in 1920 – it was sculpted by Daniel Chester French. The text adorning the walls surrounding Lincoln comes from two of his most famous speaches, 'The Gettysburg Address' and his 'Second Inaugural Address'. Plenty of other famous speaches have been given under these words and under Lincoln's gaze, including Martin Luthor King's 'I Have a Dream' speech.

The main structure of it borrows from Greek temples, and drama is added to the over all effect by the Reflection Pool it sits at the edge of.

This is a place that you can come any time. It's interesting an night as well as in the day. Impressive as well as interesting. Really quite something.
