This museum's main exhibitions tell the story of a battle, that though it only lasted one day, was a huge event in Russian history. This was the battle between Napoleon's troops and the Russians under Field Marshall Kutuzov in August 1812, who is the one depicted in bronze, on high, on horseback in front of the museum. Held just outside the tiny village of Fili, this battle was to decide the fate of Moscow and Russia and resulted in Kutuzov deciding to surrender Moscow.
The outside of the museum is rounded glass, but inside the air rings thick with battle sound effects, played against the backdrop of a huge mural depicting some of the bloodiest and dramatic moments of the battle. Uniforms, weapons and military banners are in amongst the original drawings and notes taken at the time of the battle.
