Carcassonne is a famous landmark of southwest France. This medieval fortress town was once a stronghold of the Cathars, a "heretical" Christian sect that was exterminated without mercy by the armies of the Pope.

Somewhat fake, but still magical...

Suffers slightly from too many people in period dress and fake 'dungeon' tours, however its an amazing place to visit. Dont stay (or eat for that matter) in the old city unless you want to be ripped off. Stay across the river for a huge saving and a 10 minute walk.

Historic Fortified City of Carcassonne

Since the pre-Roman period, a fortified settlement has existed on the hill where Carcassonne now stands. In its present form it is an outstanding example of a medieval fortified town, with its massive defences encircling the castle and the surrounding buildings, its streets and its fine Gothic cathedral. Carcassonne is also of exceptional importance because of the lengthy restoration campaign undertaken by Viollet-le-Duc, one of the founders of the modern science of conservation.
