This tiny town has long been home to an indigenous tribe known for their handicrafts and rituals; the Saturday market in Otavalo pre-dates the Incas and is a festive event, not just celebrating the land’s bounty and skill of the people but a time for the community to don traditional dress, sing, dance and perform ancient rituals. Textiles, musical instruments and silver are the souvenirs to bring home, guinea pig the local delicacy.
