The Mercato Nuovo (New Market, so named to distinguish it from the older Old Market) building was built in the 16th Century as a marketplace for luxury goods like silk, was then taken over by the craze for straw hats, and is now a good place to find leather goods, traditional local embroidered linens or souvenirs. You can still buy straw hats here as well.

The market place is artistically garnished with a fountain in the centre called the 'Fountain of the Piglet', so you can probably imagine what it depicts, and with statues of famous locals which line the sides of the market building. The big pig gives the square its local name: 'Porcellino'. It's supposed to be lucky to rub his nose.
