Rungis is the largest wholesale market in the world and not for the fainthearted. It requires heaving yourself out of bed in the middle of night so as not to miss the fish market which closes at 6am, constant vigilance to dodge the dollies and small motorised carts which zoom up and down the narrow corridors between the crates of produce and finally fail-proof orientation skills to avoid getting lost in the 575 acre enormity of the market that provides Paris with nearly half of all its fish, meat, vegetables fruit and flowers. With its clinically bright lighting and all the produce crated up and ready to be shipped off this market is not a feast for the eyes, but the sheer quantity of produce (everyday over one and a half million tones of produce changes hands) and the huge variety is impressive. Tourists do not belong on the market floor (the market is not open to the public), and this is reflected in the hefty price of tours which only start after 9am, when the market is coming to a close. However within Rungis, there are thirty restaurants where you can literally get your teeth into the best that the market has to offer.
