The Thursday camel market in Douz does attract the tourists, but it’s still frequented by the Touareg tribes who use camels to ship their wares across the desert. This is essentially a livestock market - the experience is described by many people as being buzzy or frenetic, a busy exchange between travellers and market sellers, while the rest of the week this oasis is described as sleepy.

Douz is the largest oasis in the western Tunisia, and its palm and date lined streets and markets are a welcome relief from the desert for those who travel it all the time, and a window into it for visitors searching for the romance of the rolling Saharan sands. It has been re-arranged for tourist eyes though, so like the camel market, expect things to be sanitised and neatly arranged for your camera shot.
