The Dong Xuan Market is an indoor market that's been created mainly for tourists – but that's not a reason not to visit: its stalls selling souvenirs, artefacts, lots of different foods and local tours. It's the food that you should really go for – its real local food. Try Pho cuon, which is beef wrapped in rice vermicelli served with herbs and spicy fish sauce, or fried frog, again with a spicy fish sauce or if you're really brave try tiet canh, which is uncooked duck blood.

As far as the forty or so stalls go you can find traditional art and ceramics – both fakes and the real thing – lace and other locally produced textiles as well as the standard tourist tat.
