Chania's main covered market is just in front of the historic Venetian and Turkish quarters of the city, buy the entrance to the fort – modelled on the market at Versailles you can't mistake it. People have been doing their groceries here since the beginning of the 20th century and there's still a chance to buy from the same stores, butchers, bakeries and fishmongers. Saturday is the best day to come and the best things to buy are bunches of local herbs.

Before this market was built here almost a hundred years ago this site was a Venetian bastion. The Public Gardens are right next door.
