This hundred year old, kilometre long market will sell you a bit of everything to lay your table with, including the table cloth, crockery and cutlery. There are something like 300 hundred stalls, at one end selling fruit and vegetables, fish, meats and cheeses and at the other clothes, cosmetics and bedding – well you don’t want bedding that smells like a fish market do you. Amsterdam’s multicultural residents have added their wares to the mix for an even greater range of flavours, scents and colours.
The market has become so big it closes the street for the six days a week it’s held and there’s a lot of strolling and grazing from the food stalls to be going on with. If you want to have what the locals are having opt for the Vlaamse frites – local French fries – or stroopwafel – heavy wafers filled with even heavier syrup.
You’ll find clothes, DVDs and CDs, books, bikes, electronics, batteries and all sorts of random household items but you can’t buy it on the stalls you may find it in one of the stores set up behind the line of market stalls.
