This 1994 $1.5b baroque structure, with its own artificial island, is the tallest hotel in the world (claimed as ‘7’ star), taking the form of an Arabian boat dhow. Symbolising Dubai’s urban transformation, several features demanded complex engineering. The building is cleverly cooled from the top, down the atrium via the milky, curving fibreglass sail, a membrane façade – saving massive energy costs. The atrium is the tallest in the world at 180 metres, brought about by the ‘sail’ that shields the hotel from the heat, wind and dirt from the mainland. It is formed between the building’s V-shaped span and occupies one third of the total space inside. A dramatic mix of east/west lavish luxury in ultra-modern sculptural design. Architect: Tom Wright of W.S. Atkins, UK.
