Cities in like Tainan and Kaohsiung are great places to learn Mandarin Chinese. Mandarin is one of the two official languages spoken in Taiwan, the other being Taiwanese.

Courses usually run 3-4 months. To qualify for a study visa you will need to be in class daily with a minimum weekly total of 15 hours of attendance. The school with the best reputation among both Taiwanese and foreigners is Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages in Kaohsiung. Their Center for Chinese Learning runs two 18 week semesters and a shorter summer semester. Students study speaking as well as reading and writing. Traditional Chinese characters are taught using Hanyu Pinyin, the most popular way of learning characters world-wide and the method used in China to teach children.

Outside of classes there are opportunities to practice with Taiwanese students as well as the local people in day to day situations. Some schools will also offer special activities and field trips.
