This lake is in a high mountain valley, tucked between snow speckled peaks and met and fed by glaciers which give the water its clear, slightly greening shimmer. It’s close to the sky so changes colour as the clouds pass.

Many people know the lake from a fairy tale written by a poet about a Persian Prince who falls in love with a fairy princess at the lake after she comes down to admire its beauty at the full moon.

For fact fans the lake is one of the highest in Pakistan, and a four to six hour walk from Naran, the nearest town, and you have to ford a glacier which lies between the town and the lake. It’s about 40 minutes if you have a jeep and there are horses and porters available in Naran to help you if you’re planning to stay in the campsite.

Despite looking remote the lake is beginning to feel less so as more visitors come to admire it. If you arrive early you’ll enjoy the freshest conditions and most serene quiet.
