Lake Powell is an artificial lake created by the controversial Glen Canyon Dam, which flooded the "place no one knew" - the remote and beautiful Glen Canyon of the Colorado River. Today this vast inland sea in the heart of high desert wasteland presents a truly incongruous sight. A popular all-day excursion by boat is to the world's largest stone arch, Rainbow Bridge, which is sacred to the Navajos. Fans of sci-fi will recognize Lake Powell from the original Planet of the Apes movie.
