Quiet in the morning, offering perfect conditions for paddlers, in the afternoon the wind picks up across Lake Köycegiz and it’s time for the windsurfers and sailors to come out for their turn. There’s also ample fishing opportunities, not half because the lake has channels leading directly to the sea so there are salt and fresh water portions to its ample, rambling spread of deltas and channels. If you’d rather watch someone else fish then there are plenty of birds who are doing just that, the live in the thick reed beds and in the pine forests on the mountain side of the lake.

It’s a big lake so the best way to see it is by boat, and if you’re after a bit of romance try an evening boat trip when you can expect the water to be as still as a mirror.

Köyceğiz Lake

Köyceğiz Lake joins the sea via a naturally formed channel, so it's an easy inland trip for sailors, and a calm, glassy place when you get there. There's fishing, mostly being done by cormorants, and endless beds of reeds, bringing the Bible to mind, and if you float for long enough you'll end up by the tombs of Kaunos which are carved into the rocky cliffs above the water.

You can stay in the town along the lake's shore, or boat in from busier Dalyan where the tourist boats float off from.
