Lake Garda is one of the most beautiful lakes in Europe - with a backdrop of mountains on the one side and vines on the other, it's been a refuge for stressed out emperors and their hangers-on for millenia. There are plenty of special places to stay around this lake, including the incomparable Villa Feltrinelli for those who really want pampering, as well as gardens to visit, boat rides to take, and activities like kitesurfing and windsurfing for the more active.
