El Dorado was an Indian chief who lived in these parts and whose wife was supposed to live at the bottom of Guatavita Laguna. The only way he could visit her was to cover himself in gold dust and submerge himself in the lake, he used to throw in offerings of gold and emeralds to her as well as any good husband should. From this story you can see where the Spanish got the idea that these there hills were filled with gold or that there was a city of gold to plunder.

The lake gathered here in the crater of a meteor

A lot of people have tried to get to the bottom of the lake to find the gold and to the bottom of the story about it - in fact the large scaring in the lake’s edge is from one of the lake draining exploits conducted using dynamite – but so far only a small number of gold and silver relics have been found.

The lake is a two hour bus ride from Bogota.
