Heavenly Lake (Tian Chi) lies crescent shaped, hemmed in on all sides by some of China’s most serene and picturesque mountain scenery, it‘s rounded edge lapping on Heavenly Mountain. Snow, ice and melted glaciers feed the lake it’s cool clear water. This whole high mountain region is shaped by the fluctuation of the glaciers that have covered the mountain passes in this region for eons and as well as the sheer mountains the scene encompasses glacial lakes with ice bridges and ice fountains. Ancient Han and Tang Dynasty Buddhist temples dot the lakes edge, including one make of blue stone and iron tiles. A popular muse in ancient Chinese poetry and literature and for visitors in the summer months when the alpine fields and forests burst with wild flowers and an abundance of varied wildlife. In the winter the lake sometimes freezes enough to skate on it.
