This still lake formed inside a crater is thought of as sacred by Hindus, who consider the water in the lake to be kin with the water in the Ganges. On the edge of the water is a temple and behind that a henna streaked hill.

Every year the Hindu community of Mauritius perform a barefoot pilgrimage to the lake in honour of Lord Shiva. It’s usually held in February or March to coincide with the Hindu calendar.
