Dead Sea - the lowest place on Earth

Listed under Lakes in Jordan.

The Dead Sea is the lowest place on Earth but it is far more than just a geographical wonder. Located on the edge of the Negev and S'dom Deserts, the Israeli Dead Sea region is home to an abundance of sites, cultural and leisure. Firstly, the town of Ein Bokek houses a large number of world-class hotels with spas containing Dead Sea treatments. Some also have direct beach access. Base yourself here for a few days of tranquil relaxation.

About half an hour's drive north is the ancient site of Masada a mountaintop fortress which was the site of a famouse Roman siege. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a cable car (or path) are able to access the fortress where there is now a visitors centre as well as excavations which can be walked through. The site also affords beautiful panoramas of the Dead Sea.

The botanical gardens at Kibbutz Ein Gedi are also fascinating, whilst any visit to the area isnt complete without an excursion with a jeep into the desert (with a guide of course).
