One of the jewels of North America, Crater Lake may be the most stunning caldera lake on the planet (other contenders include Japan’s Lake Mashu and Guatemala’s Lake Atitlan). This marvel of natural beauty was born of incredible violence when a gigantic volcano exploded about 7000 years ago. Some 2000 feet below the rim of the 6-mile wide caldera, the deep blue color of the lake on a sunny day is unparalleled in its intensity and overwhelms the viewer no matter how many times one sees it. You can drive completely around the caldera for a variety of perspectives.
