This lake is a giant basin of rain water slowly evaporating adding its salt deposit to the huge salt pans at on its bed. In summer the lake dries up entirely – the temperatures here comfortably reach and uncomfortable 50 degrees Celsius – and all that’s’ left is around 7,000 square kilometres of crusted salt. You can walk or drive across it when it’s really dry but it’s a precarious business – you can never tell how deep or strong the salt crust is.

The heat and evaporation cause fata morganas – the appearance of cliff like mirages or fairytale castles on the lake.

Just beyond the lake is the Grand Erg Desert.
