The rugged coast around Kaikoura on New Zealand's South Island is a great place to go sea kayaking with the locals - who are sharks, dolphins, seals, whales and other members of the animal kingdom.  While it's best that whales keep their distance from you and your small, light kayak, seals are more friendly and will come much closer.  You don't have to venture far from the shore to see the marine life, you can see whales from the coast. Local operators have great tour options and it pays to go with the locals as this coastline packs a few surprises when the weather turns.
