Kayaking Doubtful and Milford Sounds

Listed under Kayaking in South Island, New Zealand.

This cool fjord edged slice of coastline will tear you away from the crowds. The scenery is varied: rainforests sweep down to hidden beaches or else the coast is lined with rocky cliffs. Water conditions are also changeable with an amazing ecosystem with fresh water mingling with saltwater. This is the back of beyond - you need to carry everything you will need out for there is no QuickyMart!

If you're looking for adventure and solitude Doubtful Sound will give you both, especially if you opt to hike the Milford track and then kayak or vice versa. This is the kind of place you can spend as much time as you have, be it a day or a week, you're right in amongst the dramatic mountains scenery and you're not likely to meet anyone but marine life so take your fishing rod!

Milford Sound has similar vistas but is less remote and there is a lot more tourist traffic... It's an excellent place to go for a day paddle with less of an reliance on being self sufficient.
