Hinchinbrook Island is Australia's largest island wilderness national park. The Coral Sea island is located offshore of Cardwell in North Queensland and stretches over 50km from north to south. The entire island is a World Heritage Listed wilderness surround by the World Heritage Listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. With granite peaks rising 1100m and tropical rainforests draping the slopes, Hinchinbrook is a stunning backdrop for sea-kayakers. In fact sea-kayaks are probabaly the best way to experience the island as the marine wildlife, idyllic beaches, coral reefs and rainforest waterfalls are an unbeatable combination. Most sea-kayakers paddle from Lucinda in the South along the east coast and then through the Family Island to Mission Beach, a distance of around 100km. The mangroves of the Hinchinbrook Channel should be avoided due to the large Saltwater Crocodiles, however the east coast is relatively croc free.
regarded by many as the greatest wilderness sea-kayak journey in Australia. This trip was pioneereed over 20 years ago by Australian company World Expeditions www.worldexpeditions.com
