Beginning in Mendoza South America’s fabled Route 40 goes both north, to San Juan, La Rioja, Catamarca, Salta, Jujuy and onto the high plateaus around Abra Pampa, and southwards through Rio Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz, finishing in Punta Loyola. 1551kms north and 3115kms south. If you journeyed the entire route you’d pass through 20 national parks, some of the world’s highest volcanoes, salt deserts, green valleys and past snow covered mountains over 6,990 metres high. While parts are motorway or good paved roads, parts are not much more than dirt tracks and one section passes almost unnoticed from the surrounding frozen Patagonian desert.
