What could make so many people want to get up at 5:30AM and sit like luggage on top of a cold metal train in the middle of a plain waiting for it to depart at 7 only to be returned to the same place at the end of your journey? The view and the chance to ride this historic train route carving up and through the Andes mountains! Taking four hours along 45 degree inclines, sheer cliff drops through this dry mountainous countryside, the route’s construction was a true feat of engineering. The final hour is the most dramatic, down to the Devil’s Nose itself, a long spur of mountain edged by more sheer cliffs which the train navigates as a switchback. For those looking for a bit less drama and more comfort there are passenger carriages.
