In July 2007 we spent 2 weeks on Velidhu Island. Our main reason for going to the Maldives was to dive. We arent really into the whole lying on a beach doing nothing thing. We spent most of our time diving. The diving was amazing!
We particularly enjoyed a site called Maaya thila - there were lots of sharks - Nurse, Grey & white tips.
On one of our dives there were only 4 people and when the dive finished we noticed a big school of dolphins, about 30 odd not too far from the boat! So we grabbed our snorkels and swam out to them, they had babies so we made sure we kept our distance. It was an amazing experience and one I'll never forget! I loved listening to them chatting to each other, all the clicks and squeaks.
We also saw turtles, giant baracuda, cuttlefish, scorpion fish, lion fish and practically every fish you see in the guide books.
We took the Manta safari, luckily there were only 8 people the day we went, the day before there were 35! The mantas are so graceful, we saw 6 in total.
Velidhu was a nice resort, the rooms, although basic, were spacious and clean. The Island itself is stunning! Its very well kept! The wild life on and around the island was amazing, loads of lizards, birds & bats and in the surrounding water there were loads of baby black tips and stingrays.
It was a great experience but on the days we didnt dive there wasnt alot to do. I would go back to the Maldives to dive but I would stay somewhere different to experience different dive sites.

See it before it's submerged. An arhipelago of over 1000 small coral islands, mostly only about 1 metre above sea level. Only about 200 are inhabited, and many are now private resorts. Idyllic white sand, turquoise sea with very good snorkelling & diving around the coral reefs. Also good for surfing & windsurfing. Helegeli is a good all-round resort without being too expensive.
