Tongatapu is the biggest island in the Tongan Kingdom. It’s a large, flat coral island raised on its southern side to 20 metre cliffs. Most of the interior is covered in a patchwork of plantations. The eastern side of the island is the most interesting, and has the ancient Langi Tombs, royal burial sites made of massive stones shaped like elongated pyramids, limestone caves and coves, and the best of the island's white beaches.

The Tongan Royal Palaces are also on Tongatapu.

A short distance off Tongatapu’s shores lie several small uninhabited coral islands which are great for snorkelling. Tongatapu also has lots of good walking trails and a few good breaks for surfers and several ocean pools which protect swimmers perfectly.
