Known best for its soft coral diving sites and sometimes referred to as the garden island of Fiji, Tavenuni is long, thin, tropical and moist. It has a huge variety of plant life including many brightly coloured exotic flowers, which the native birds love, waterfalls and unique indigenous fauna.
Tavenuni’s most recognisable feature is the very rare Tagimaucia flower with its red, white centred flowers.
Unlike the rest of Fiji the mongoose has never been introduced here so Taveuni still supports many rare creatures including several species of land crabs that live no where else on earth. It is also known for its pristine beaches.
The majority of Taveuni’s inhabitants live in traditional Fijian villages on the western side of the island where they are protected from the worst of the rain. Traditionally the chief of all Fiji lives in Taveuni’s Somosomo village and all of the big inter-tribal councils are held here.
There are several developed resorts and ex-pat towns, however not all of these have been equally successful and some are shabby and almost deserted. There is a huge range of accommodation available, from camping on the beach to five star luxury, and as yet Taveuni is fairly uncrowded.
