You say St. Bart’s, and I say Saint Barths or St. Barth or even when taking punctuation into account St. Barts… The island of St. Barthelemy isn’t just many things to many people it goes by many, very similar, names. The mix up with the name probably comes from issues between the French, who now ‘own’ the island and the English who like to spell things their way, but ‘it’ was historically a Swedish colony, so your pronunciation is as good as mine. What all nations agree on is that the standard of living on St. Barths is desirably high and the beaches pristine. One brought the other and the rich and famous followed, improving things further if you like gourmet dining, boutique hotels and designer shopping.

If you can afford to come here as well as strutting your elegant stuff around the chic Swedish named streets of the towns, reclining languidly in chic cafes and lapping up the luxury in sun-brightened surrounds, you can also enjoy some celebrated beaches. Undeveloped Anse de Grande Saline is on the island’s southern side and Colombier Beach, only reachable by boat or helicopter, which keeps out the non-serious beach lover, are the two most proclaimed – in quiet whispers. A more user-friendly beach, and supposedly one of the best in the Caribbean for learning to windsurf, kite surf or sail is Grand Cul-de-Sac.
