Sifnos is on the western edge of the Cyclades, less popular with the tourists, but no less pretty, with its cosmopolitan and colourful port and green, by Cycladic standards, interior. Sifnos has the same whitewashed towns as the more popular islands, similar sparkling blue watered beaches and bays, 365 churches, a clear human time line going back five thousand years, and a rockier, jet lusher interior. One of the reason the water sparkles so is that Sifnos had the first sewerage system on any of the Greek islands, and that was put in thousands of years ago. This used to be on the wealthiest islands in the clutch, blessed with both gold and silver mines, and the kind of clay that makes for beautiful pottery. The food and drink have a good reputation also and you get it all for less than you'd pay on one of the more popular, touristy islands.
