It’s a Caribbean island archipelago because it’s in the Caribbean, but San Andres is part of Colombia so isn’t as well saturated by the tourist market as some of the other Caribbean paradise islands and practically all the visitors come from nearby Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica and Colombia.

The main island of San Andres is well built up – you can walk from the airport to the city – but it’s also a small place, you can get a bus around the whole island in about three hours. On that trip you’ll see quite beaches and small townships whose inhabitants were slaves brought over to work on the sugar plantations.

One of the main reasons so visit San Andres is to go diving of snorkelling – there are some sights to see under the sea that are just as idyllic as those above the waterline.
