A very religious location for Hindu pilgrims, Sagar Island is located in the delta in the mouth of the Hooghly River where the Ganges meets the sea. Pilgrims bathe in the river delta during a January festival to seek enlightenment.
The island is fringed with mangrove swamps and criss-crossed by smaller rivers. It is also home to the endangered Bengal Tiger.
There is limited electricity on the island, and it is only switched on for several hours during the evening. Visitors need to beware not only of mosquito bites, but also of snakebites, and carry insect and snake repellent.
Except during the festival Sagar Island is a peaceful place to visit, especially if you’re interested in Indian culture.
