Rottnest Island (or Rotto to Perth locals) is tiny, but has 63 beaches and 20 bays - many of them the white, sandy, sweeping, turquoise edged kinds your tropical beach dreams are made of. The whole island is classed as a Nature Reserve and though there aren’t any palm trees the interior has its own wildflowers and hardy scrub where you can meet the curious but too cute Quokkas, something like a tiny wallaby, who are the islands main inhabitants.

Off a particularly nice stretch of Western Australian coast there is also plenty of marine life to see when you dive or snorkel in the clear warm water along reefs complete with wrecks.

The main way to get around the island is on a bike, there are good roads and the whole island is fairly flat.

Don’t go in the lead up of the aftermath to the end of the school year when the whole island is booked out with young revellers (you probably won’t be able to get any accommodation then anyway - it’s is booked up 12 months ahead - but just in case it’s during November you have to be careful.).

Surf, kayak, ride your bike, sun bathe, swim, sail, eat well, enjoy nature and all in the sunshine. There are other local attractions but Rottnest’s natural features are the main reason to visit, everything else is just to help you pass the time. Rottnest has limited accommodation, it’s a pretty small island, so you should book your bed before you get on the ferry, but it’s close enough for a day trip.
