Rodrigues is a bit of a secret isle, despite, or maybe because, of being only about 500kms from the main island. This isn’t just a smaller version, though it does have the same volcanic upbringing and interior of verdant green – it’s just a lot more mountainous, and instead of the sugar cane there are fruit trees and fields of vegetables. The beaches are different as well – there aren’t as many of them and there’s more rock between each of them, but that means that there are a lot less people on each one and you have a far better chance of leaving the first footprints each day than you have on the main island. That doesn’t mean that this isle is deserted – the local population is quite dense, from a mixture of Creole and African descent, more likely to speak Creole than French of English. Which all in all makes for a very different kind of Mauritian holiday.
