Roatan is best known as the location of some of the world's best diving and snorkelling sites and is fringed by the second largest coral reef on the planet, home to a great diversity of marine life. It is also a popular fishing and sailing destination.

Roatan has white sandy beaches shaded by palms and a tropical jungle interior, it also has a Butterfly Garden and an Iguana Farm.

Historically this area was fought over by the English and the Spanish, which is why there are several good wreck dives off Roatan’s coast. The local language is Creole English.

Once thought of as one of the Caribbean’s best kept secrets, the secret is now out and in 2006, approximately 250,000 visitors travelled to Roatan. This increase in tourism over the last decade has changed Roatan’s ecosystem, but local government says conservation practices seem to have protected most of the reef and the introduction of new environmentally friendly septic systems and water conservation practices will hopefully reduce the environmental impact of future tourism.

Roatan has accommodation suitable for all budgets.
